Brazilian Pantanal

Brazil September 1 to 12, 2025 Max. 8 11 Nights

The Brazilian Pantanal

Covering over 60,000 square miles, the Brazilian Pantanal is the world’s largest tropical wetland and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Planet Earth. Notably, itt is recognized for holding the densest population of Jaguars in the world. In addition to these incredible big cats, the Pantanal is a haven for iconic wildlife, including Yacare Caiman, Capybara, Brazilian Tapir, Giant Otter, and nearly 450 bird species–many of them rare and highly sought-after by birders and naturalists.

Our journey begins on the Trans-Pantanal Highway, where we will travel by land–via truck safaris, small hikes, and time in observation towers–as we encounter the diverse wildlife and birdlife of the region. We will then switch to boat travel as we explore the rivers of this region and venture deeper into the heart of the Pantanal. It is here where we will find Jaguars. For much of our itinerary, our lodging will be in a floating hotel at the center of wildlife activity in this region, providing an excellent base for our daily river excursions.

Throughout this tour, you will be led by some of Brazil’s most skilled guides, drivers, and boat captains. Their sharp eyes and local expertise will ensure unforgettable encounters and stunning photographic opportunities of the magnificent Jaguars, incredible wildlife, and beautiful birds that call the Pantanal home. If you’re interested in seeing some of the most emblematic wildlife of the Americas, this tour cannot be missed!

Highlight and Target Wildlife

  • We will have unparalleled opportunities to seek Jaguars, as the Pantanal offers the densest and most accessible populations of this large cat on Earth

  • Giant Otters, playful and social, whose dynamic interactions make for compelling water-based photography

  • We will look for other unique mammal species, such as Capybara, Brazilian Tapir, Giant Anteater, and several monkeys.

  • The Pantanal is home to ~450 species of birds, including the rare Hyacinth Macaw, iconic Toco Toucan, massive Greater Rhea, and unique Red-legged Seriema.

Weather and climate

In July, the Pantanal is in its dry season, with temperatures typically ranging between 55°F and 90°F (13°C to 32°C). The region’s water levels recede, concentrating wildlife around rivers and lagoons, making it an ideal time for wildlife photography. Skies are generally clear, with minimal rain and low humidity, allowing for pleasant boat outings and safaris.

October marks the beginning of the wet season, bringing warmer temperatures between 65°F and 95°F (18°C to 35°C). Occasional afternoon thunderstorms begin to replenish the water levels, creating lush landscapes. Wildlife remains active, with birds nesting and jaguars still frequently seen along riverbanks. Photographers should prepare for a mix of sunny, humid days and sudden rain showers.
