Iceland Birding: The Land of Fire and Ice

A land forged by fire and ice, Iceland’s other-worldly landscapes–volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, fjords, basalt cliffs, and black sand beaches–must be seen to be believed. Perched on the edge of the Arctic Circle and astride the American and European tectonic plates, the island is still being shaped by the geological forces that created it. With fewer than half a million human inhabitants, nature dominates in Iceland, making this extraordinary place a haven for birdlife and an unparalleled destination for birding.

As soon as we depart Reykjavík, we will find that exciting birds like Snow Bunting, Common Redshank, and European Golden-Plover become common roadside sights. We may even spot the immense and majestic White-tailed Eagle. Venturing along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, we’ll find nesting Parasitic Jaeger, Red-throated Loon, and Rock Ptarmigan, all against the dramatic backdrop of the glacier-gapped Snæfellsjökull volcano. As we reach the coast, we’ll find incredible colonies of all five of Iceland’s breeding alcids plus innumerable Black-legged Kittiwakes and Northern Fulmars. If we get lucky, we may even spot a group of Orcas offshore. The adventure continues as we survey habitats from the rugged coastline to the breathtaking highlands, being sure to explore the unique geographical features and picturesque towns along the way. A journey to Lake Mývatn will offer chances to see the highly sought-after Gyrfalcon and some of the most diverse waterfowl breeding congregations on Planet Earth.
